Iran Demands Compensation for Oil Spill
Iran has demanded compensation for an oil spill in the Strait of Hormuz that reached Qeshm Island. Reports indicate that a foreign bulk carrier appears to be the source. The country’s Department of Environment has initiated cleanup operations and is investigating the spill’s origin.
“Who bears responsibility for compensating these damages?” asked Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei. He urged that all parties benefiting from shipping through the Strait have a responsibility to address the environmental damage.
Baqaei did not disclose the amount of compensation sought but noted extensive environmental degradation in the Persian Gulf over recent years.
Strait of Hormuz: Control Claims
The head of Iran’s Basij paramilitary group, Hossein Taeb, reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz is under Iranian control, countering President Trump’s previous claim of U.S. control over the strategic waterway.
International Condemnation of Iran Executions
Over 30 countries, including France, Britain, and Canada, have condemned Iran’s execution of protesters. They argue it serves to silence dissent. The European Union also joined the call for Iran to stop using the death penalty and release those detained arbitrarily.
The statement described the use of capital punishment as unjustifiable for suppressing human rights.
Iran’s foreign minister dismissed the criticism, accusing Western nations of hypocrisy over human rights issues.
