Cursive Writing Education in Modern Schools

More than 25 states now mandate that students learn to read and write in cursive. This educational requirement reflects a significant shift back to a once-common practice in American schooling.

In the early 20th century, learning to write in cursive or script was standard in the United States. Children were generally taught this style, as opposed to the print writing often introduced to young learners today. Some believed that the quality of a person’s cursive writing offered insights into their character.

The reintroduction of cursive in schools allows students to learn a skill once considered a rite of passage. This emphasis on cursive aims to revive the traditional aspect of education and instill values associated with it.
