The NFL fined three Dallas Cowboys players following their season-opening defeat to the New York Giants. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku, and running back Javonte Williams faced fines totaling $33,409 as reported in the NFL’s weekly accountability report.
Overshown incurred a $9,527 fine for a late hit on Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart during the first quarter. This unnecessary roughness penalty granted New York a 15-yard advance, leading to a touchdown drive. Ezeiruaku was fined $11,941 for grabbing a Giants player’s facemask in the fourth quarter, aiding New York in running down the clock for a 28-20 victory. Williams faced an $11,941 fine for taunting Giants safety Tyler Nubin after scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
“I don’t know why I did it. It’s just out of character. You don’t got to worry about that no more,” Williams admitted, according to NFL Network’s Jane Slater. “The damage is already done. It’s my fault. I’m better than that. I’m a pro.”
The penalty for taunting led to a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which impacted the subsequent extra-point attempt. Brandon Aubrey’s 48-yard kick attempt failed, keeping the Cowboys eight points behind.
Both teams committed numerous penalties, with Dallas having nine accepted infractions, while the Giants committed 11, resulting in a game filled with a total of 20 penalties.
Jackson Thompson, a sports reporter covering political and cultural issues in sports, noted these infractions. His work has appeared in various reputable media outlets and in federal government actions related to Title IX.
