Oregon icon Dan Fouts recently addressed the inherent violence in football, sparked by an incident during the Ducks’ 41-20 triumph over USC. In the second quarter of that game, linebacker Desman Stephens struck quarterback Dante Moore in the head with a reckless late hit. Stephens’ initial celebration was cut short as Moore was carted off the field, creating a disturbing scene.
Fouts commended Oregon’s head coach Dan Lanning for his composed response to the situation. According to Fouts, Lanning gathered the team, calmed the players, and led a prayer for Moore. He used the moment to remind the team about focus, preparation, and the significance of their efforts.
Recalling his reaction to the play, Fouts expressed concern for Moore’s health, acknowledging the inherent dangers of the sport. He noted that anyone who has played football understands the risk of injury, and Moore’s situation was particularly alarming.
Addressing Stephens’ initial celebration, Fouts attributed it to a youthful mistake made in the heat of the moment.
Kids are kids, and I think the player got caught up in the moment of something that I’m sure he regrets now, his actions, but in the heat of the moment, he made a mistake,Fouts remarked.
USC took disciplinary action by suspending Stephens for the upcoming game against Washington. The linebacker issued an apology for his inappropriate behavior, recognizing the seriousness of seeing a player injured and expressing regret over his actions.
Stephens stated his commitment to learn from the incident, offering an apology to Moore, his family, and all spectators. He clarified that his actions did not reflect USC’s values, expressing hope for Moore’s swift recovery.
Meanwhile, Dan Lanning labeled Stephens’ hit on Moore as “disgusting.” Moore remains in concussion protocol, and his return date is yet to be announced.
