Dansby Swanson’s Rehab Journey
Dansby Swanson is navigating uncertainty as he recovers from an oblique strain. The Chicago Cubs shortstop accompanied the team to Miami for a series against the Marlins. Despite stepping up his pregame routine, Swanson is unsure about his progress due to his unfamiliarity with this type of injury. He has been following the training staff’s guidelines, doing field work and hitting exercises.
Swanson, 32, emphasized balancing urgency with caution in his return strategy. He appreciates the structured plan from the team and aims to deliver his best effort daily. The Cubs anticipate adjustments to game speed when Swanson returns, ideally giving him time to reintegrate before September ends. Swanson uses a Trajekt Arc pitching machine to help stay engaged in the game.
Swanson expressed regret over the injury but remains optimistic. He continues to support his teammates even while sidelined. Swanson landed on the injured list on August 17, with a recovery expectation of four to six weeks. The Cubs hope for a swift comeback, considering the stubborn nature of oblique injuries. They ensure Swanson’s oblique can handle game-level conditions before returning.
“Feeling it’ differs from being injured,” said manager Craig Counsell, highlighting the balance needed during rehab. The muscle’s constant use demands readiness for daily play.
Cubs Pitching Updates
Cubs pitcher Javier Assad could join the pitching staff soon. He was on the team’s taxi squad and is likely to factor into weekend games, with potential for recall from Triple A. Assad could fill the starting role Saturday in Miami, allowing for strategic rotation adjustments.
Assad has excelled in various roles, maintaining a 2.24 ERA since May. The Cubs contemplate a six-man rotation, with flexibility for upcoming games.
Additional Injury Progress
Edward Cabrera and Shelby Miller, both right-handers, are advancing their rehab with Triple-A Iowa. Both pitched Friday, aiming to bolster the Cubs bullpen. Cabrera is adapting to a relief role, while Miller seeks successful back-to-back outings after Tommy John surgery.
Counsell emphasized caution during rehab, highlighting the plan for Miller to eventually pitch consecutive days.
Cabrera showed promise in his first outing, set to continue rehab assignments. Limited games in the season may restrict back-to-back opportunities for Cabrera, but different scenarios are planned.
Counsell noted,“We’re exploring varied scenarios for Cabrera’s role.”
