A strong endorsement from President Donald Trump helped Darline Graham, R-S.C., secure a win in a crucial South Carolina runoff election. The contest was between her and Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., to fill the Senate seat left vacant by her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Even though her political experience was limited, Graham’s familiar name and connection to her brother gave her an edge. She received Trump’s endorsement, which proved to be a significant factor in her victory.
Trump’s Support Plays a Decisive Role
Governor Henry McMaster had appointed Graham to the position temporarily. However, Trump encouraged her to make a bid for the full term. “Darline is somebody I’ve known for a long time,” Trump stated at a rally. He expressed deep respect for her and insisted she run for the position permanently.
Despite some challenges during her campaign, including a slip-up in a debate, Trump’s support remained strong. He provided additional financial backing through MAGA Inc., significantly aiding her campaign efforts.
Focusing on Domestic Issues
Graham presented herself as a candidate prioritizing domestic concerns over foreign policies. Her platform aligned closely with Trump’s agenda, differentiating her from her brother, Lindsey Graham.
Her campaign strategy involved highlighting her effective performance in the Senate, where she achieved notable legislative successes quickly. This included passing the bipartisan Russia sanctions package and casting a pivotal vote for confirming Todd Blanche as attorney general.
Norman’s Approach and Criticism
Norman faced criticism from Graham for opposing Republican leadership and, at times, President Trump himself. She underscored the need for a loyal Republican in the Senate to counterbalance Democrats, positioning herself as the candidate for continuity and unity within the party.
Despite her limited time in the Senate, Graham argued her accomplishments surpassed those of Norman, emphasizing her swift action and effective governance.
