A tragic incident occurred during a homecoming block party in Vienna, Georgia. Gunfire erupted early Sunday morning, resulting in two fatalities and 35 injuries, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

Details of the Incident

The shooting took place around 1:25 a.m. on Pine Street in Vienna, located in Dooly County, about 100 miles south of Atlanta. The Dooly County Sheriff’s Office deputies were patrolling when the shots were fired. Two individuals were found deceased in the 600 block of Pine Street, and their bodies have been sent for autopsies. The identities of the victims have not been disclosed.

Community and Official Reactions

Dr. Sherrod Willaford, Dooly County School System Superintendent, expressed sorrow and extended condolences to the families of those affected. The homecoming event, tied to Dooly County High School, was not sponsored by the district. Representative Patty Stinson of the Democratic state expressed her heartbreak over the incident.

Investigation and Safety Measures

The GBI and local authorities are investigating the incident, yet no motive or suspect details have been released. Sheriff Craig Peavy confirmed that over 1,000 people attended the celebration and that the shooting led to immediate response from deputies. Some injuries resulted from panic and vehicle strikes during the chaos.

In response, the school district has activated crisis support teams and enhanced safety protocols for returning students. Willaford emphasized the importance of student and staff safety and encouraged the community to support each other empathetically.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation by the GBI and the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office continues. Community members are urged to provide information to the agency’s Regional Investigative Office in Perry. The case will eventually be reviewed by the Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for potential prosecution.
