Deadly Suicide Bombing Targets Train in Quetta, Pakistan

A devastating suicide bombing took place in Quetta, the capital of the insurgency-hit Balochistan province in Pakistan. A vehicle filled with explosives was detonated near a railway track as a passenger train passed, resulting in the deaths of at least 23 people and injuring over 70 others.

The explosion overturned two train cars, which then caught fire, sending thick black smoke into the sky. The blast occurred in an area usually secured by forces, causing significant damage to nearby buildings and over a dozen vehicles. Images on social media depict the aftermath of the attack.

“We strongly condemn the targeting of innocent civilians and are deeply saddened by the loss of precious human lives. Terrorist elements deserve no leniency,” stated Shahid Rind, Balochistan provincial government spokesman.

The outlawed Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility, stating the train was targeted due to the presence of security personnel. Balochistan has a persistent low-level insurgency, with militants often targeting security forces, government sites, and civilians.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, labeling it a “cowardly act of terrorism,” and offered condolences on X to the victims’ families. Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti also condemned the attack, vowing to pursue the militants.

The attack occurred shortly after Pakistan’s announcement regarding peace efforts in the Middle East involving the United States and Iran. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari denounced the bombing, noting the militants’ aim to destabilize Pakistan’s international peace contributions.

Though authorities claim the Balochistan insurgency has been subdued, violence remains. In 2024, a similar attack in the region claimed 26 lives, including soldiers.
