A suicide attack on a passenger train in Pakistan resulted in the deaths of at least 23 individuals and injuries to approximately 70 others. The incident occurred in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, reports The Associated Press. The explosive-laden vehicle detonated near a railway line, causing two train cars to overturn and catch fire.
Balochistan has been a hotspot for insurgency, with militant and separatist groups like the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) fighting for the province’s independence. The BLA claimed responsibility, stating the train, carrying security personnel, was their target.
The Times of India highlighted that the train was transporting army members and their families for the Eid holidays. The BLA’s statement mentioned targeting security personnel specifically.
Witnesses described the explosion’s power, which flipped train cars, ignited fires, and heavily damaged nearby structures and vehicles. According to The AP, images on social media showed thick plumes of black smoke rising over the area.
Medical responders rushed victims to hospitals, where doctors reported about 20 of the wounded were in critical condition.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the attack as a “cowardly act of terrorism,” asserting that those responsible would face justice. He extended condolences to the victims’ families and urged national resolve against terrorism.
“Such cowardly acts cannot weaken the resolve of the Pakistani people. We remain determined to eliminate terrorism,” Sharif stated.
Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti accused Indian-sponsored proxies of backing the militant groups. Tensions persist between India and Pakistan, notably over Kashmir, although India denies such allegations.
Bugti criticized the attackers by calling them “savage” and vowed to pursue them relentlessly.
The BLA has executed numerous large-scale attacks on Pakistani security forces, notably a similar train station bombing in 2024 that killed 26 people. Such incidents underline the ongoing security challenges in Balochistan.
