Debate Over AOC’s Comments on Southern Accent and Hanging Deaths

The panel on ‘The Five’ criticized Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for using a “fake Southern accent” during a Memphis rally for Justin Pearson. This sparked discussions about her political authenticity and capability in unscripted debates. Critics highlighted past incidents, such as the Amazon HQ2 debate in Long Island City, where her proposals were questioned.

In a related issue, Ocasio-Cortez joined Democrats in urging the Department of Justice and FBI to investigate the hanging deaths of Black Americans. They highlighted what they perceive as systemic racial bias in these agencies. This call led to a petition, spearheaded by Rep. Ayanna Pressley, declaring the hangings a “national crisis.” They demanded comprehensive investigations, citing that these deaths have often been ruled suicides without thorough investigation.

The letter, signed by Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley, and other Democrats, highlighted cases such as a 21-year-old man in Atlanta and a Delta State University student, both ruled suicides. The deaths brought back memories of Emmett Till’s murder, who was a Black teen murdered in 1955, accused falsely of flirting with a White woman.

“This year, there have already been 10 reported hangings of Black people in the U.S. I’m proud to have signed onto Rep. Pressley’s letter to address these widespread modern-day lynchings and stop this racial terror,” Ocasio-Cortez stated on social media.

Reports highlighted cases like Earl Smith in Albany and a 39-year-old man in Wisconsin, both ruled suicides. One case in Jackson, Mississippi, remained under homicide investigation, involving Tasia Fortune, whose partner was later arrested on unrelated charges.

Social media responses criticized Ocasio-Cortez’s portrayal of the situation. User corrections and media links contested her claims about “racial terror.” Critics argued over what constitutes “widespread” if few cases were homicides and suggested penalties for politicians spreading misinformation online.

The conversation also involved past incidents of hanging deaths where law enforcement ruled most as suicides. Ocasio-Cortez and Pressley did not immediately respond to comments from Fox News on the matter.
