The deadline for Congress to reauthorize a significant tool for collecting foreign intelligence is Friday. This tool, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, faces criticism from both sides of the political spectrum due to concerns about potential abuse. Some legislators are reluctant to support its renewal unless President Trump withdraws his nominee for overseeing the intelligence community.

Amna Nawaz, co-anchor and co-managing editor of PBS News Hour, spoke with Republican Representative Mike McCaul of Texas to discuss the ongoing debate. These discussions highlight the contentious nature of surveillance powers and their implications for national security and civil liberties.
