During times of war, countries often limit certain freedoms, requiring young people to join the fight. Ukraine is no exception. Despite this, conscripts in a democracy like Ukraine still retain rights and protections.
Maria Varenikova reports on Olha Reshetylova, who is tasked by the Ukrainian government with safeguarding soldiers’ rights. Her role is not to defend them from external threats like Russia, but from their own military leaders who might subject them to severe treatment.
Reshetylova, aged 40, has a personal stake in this mission as her family is directly impacted. She has two sons, aged 5 and 14, who may also have to fight if the war, ongoing for over four years, continues. Her husband is already serving at the front.
