Representative Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey has expressed concern about the increasing influence of far-left socialism within the Democratic Party. This sentiment comes as the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) gain traction in significant primaries, potentially affecting upcoming elections.
Notably, Michigan state legislator Donavan McKinney, a member of the DSA, is challenging established Democrats nationwide as the 2026 midterm elections approach. The DSA appeals strongly to base voters on the left and aligns with the working-class, anti-establishment sentiment that propelled Donald Trump to the presidency in 2016.
The DSA is making its presence felt, highlighted by Michigan state Rep. Donavan McKinney’s campaign to unseat Rep. Shri Thanedar in a primary slated for August 2, 2026. McKinney acknowledges some agreement with Republicans on a single issue: waste, fraud, and abuse. However, he contends that these issues predominantly stem from taxpayer dollars benefiting corporations and the wealthy, rather than the poor.
McKinney’s congressional campaign focuses on redirecting resources to the vulnerable, criticizing the practice of sending funds abroad instead of addressing domestic needs. He argues against what he describes as foreign military spending that harms families while neglecting local communities.
This ideological shift within the Democratic Party might bolster Republican strategies in upcoming elections, as the GOP emphasizes opposition to socialism. They argue that Americans generally reject policies centered on wealth redistribution and capitalism’s decline. DSA-supported candidates have already achieved electoral victories in New York and Colorado, unseating incumbent Democrats.
