Democratic Socialists Make Gains in Key Primaries Across the United States

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are spreading their influence across the United States. Recently, candidates supported by the DSA achieved significant victories in several high-profile Democratic primaries. This indicates a shift within the Democratic Party towards more progressive politics.

Recent Victories

Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old former attorney, won a Democratic primary in Denver, Colorado. Kiros defeated long-serving Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette. Her win follows similar successes by other DSA-backed candidates in New York City.

Darializa Avila Chevalier, a community organizer, defeated incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat. Claire Valdez, another DSA-aligned candidate, succeeded in her congressional primary as well.

Congresswoman Kiros will take the fight for a better world to D.C: to Abolish ICE, free Palestine, and win Universal Childcare and Medicare for All.

Progressive Movement

These victories highlight a growing division in the party. The far-left is challenging the center-left establishment. This trend is evident in Denver and New York City, with support from figures like socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The DSA emphasizes issues like labor rights and anti-establishment policies. Hasan Piker, a prominent far-left figure, noted that progressive politics can succeed in diverse areas.

Impact in Colorado

Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, a Democratic stronghold, saw Kiros emerge victorious. This district had overwhelmingly supported Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 elections.

Additionally, in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, State Rep. Manny Rutinel won against Shannon Bird, a moderate candidate. While he moderated some early positions, Republicans see Rutinel as a preferable opponent.

Divided Party

A Senate primary further highlighted the division. Incumbent Sen. John Hickenlooper faced a challenge from Julie Gonzales, a former DSA member. Hickenlooper retained his nomination but Gonzales generated significant grassroots support.

In the gubernatorial race, Phil Weiser defeated U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet for the Democratic nomination. Weiser positioned himself on his anti-Trump stance, challenging Bennett’s connection to Washington politics.

Republican Response

Republicans are seizing on these developments. They argue the Democratic Party is shifting too far left, jeopardizing Democratic chances in competitive districts. The National Republican Congressional Committee highlighted Rutinel’s win as an example of increasing radical influence within the party.

Paul Steinhauser, reporting for Fox News, notes that while progressive wins are gaining attention, mainstream Democrats continue to secure victories in many races.
