Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has distanced himself from well-known Twitch streamer Hasan Piker due to backlash over Piker’s controversial remarks. Political commentator Stephanie Hamill discussed the political implications and the criticism from Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff. This controversy showcases growing tensions within the Democratic Party as they approach the 2026 midterm elections.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) defended Hasan Piker, criticizing both Democrats and Republicans. The DSA condemned attention to personal attacks and introduced a resolution to criticize socialism in the House.

The DSA’s official account also referred to Hasan Piker as “our Twitch streamer.” Hasan Piker has become an influential figure among progressives, challenging moderate and pro-Israel Democrats who urge distancing from him. Though the DSA supported him, other Democrats criticized his comments on Jewish communities.
Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff rejected Piker’s comments, considering them dangerous. Ossoff expressed concern about rhetoric suggesting that advocacy might lead to violence against Jewish or other communities. These comments followed a controversial Twitch stream by Piker.
Democratic Representative Jared Moskowitz from Florida joined Ossoff’s criticism and stated that Piker’s views are not compatible with his. Moskowitz was among those who introduced an amendment to a Republican resolution condemning socialism. This resolution is expected to receive a vote soon.
The amendment aimed to retain language against socialism while removing election-related provisions like the Trump-backed SAVE America Act. Though it will not be part of the resolution, the focus remains on socialism’s historical failures and the concentration of power associated with it.
