Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper has been arrested for the second time in a week. He was taken into custody on Thursday night for allegedly violating a protection order. This followed his arrest on domestic violence charges the previous week.
Authorities arrested both Cooper and his girlfriend last Friday on multiple domestic violence charges, including two counts of domestic violence and criminal mischief, per Douglas County jail records. Reports from court documents also indicated additional charges of felony strangulation.
“We are disappointed to learn of Jonathon Cooper’s arrest on Thursday and continue to review this matter,” the Broncos stated.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by TMZ, the incident began when Cooper’s girlfriend accused him of infidelity. She reportedly grabbed his phone and threw it against a wall, later retrieving it to check it.
This action led to a struggle between the two over the phone. Cooper eventually secured the phone and asked her to leave his residence. During the incident, he allegedly threatened to break her cell phone and proceeded to damage the iPhone by biting and breaking its screen, as detailed in the affidavit.
Cooper has pleaded not guilty to these charges as of Monday. The linebacker, 28, has spent his entire five-season NFL career with the Denver Broncos after being drafted from Ohio State in the seventh round.
In the previous season, Cooper played 17 games, notching 50 tackles and eight sacks, contributing significantly to the Broncos’ defense. Over his career, he has appeared in 81 games, compiling 266 tackles with 31.5 sacks. In November 2024, Cooper secured a four-year, $60 million contract extension with the Broncos.
