Deshaun Watson’s Future with Cleveland Browns Under Scrutiny

On Sunday, Deshaun Watson aimed to justify the Cleveland Browns’ $230 million investment in him. Unfortunately, the game ended in a 34-10 loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Watson completed 16 of 22 passes, amassing 205 yards, with one touchdown, one interception, and a fumble. Although there were worse performances across the NFL, the Browns’ offense found it challenging to gain momentum.

Watson’s performance is not solely to blame, yet as a figure already surrounded by controversy, he needed a more compelling showcase. The prospect of immediate improvement seems slim. According to Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano, head coach Todd Monken intends to maintain Watson as the starting quarterback through October.

“On my visit to Browns training camp, multiple people told me first-year coach Todd Monken planned to give Watson a long leash,” noted Vacchiano. “So expect him to remain the starter at least through October — for better or, more likely, for worse.”

Browns fans are unsettled by this stance. Watson previously faced criticism for calling his fanbase “disrespectful” and “personal” after a preseason loss to the Bills. Coupling off-field controversies with lackluster performances compounds the pressure on him.

Given these issues, the organization might eventually consider Shedeur Sanders for the quarterback position. Watson’s continued performance will decide how soon—or if—a change occurs. A streak of victories could help erase his earlier struggles from fans’ memories. However, from their perspective, Watson’s opportunity to shine is dwindling, despite the head coach’s playbook.
