In Brussels, a ring encrusted with 321 diamonds, 56 sapphires, 13 emeralds, and six rubies has captured attention. Designed to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, the ring features symbols like the Stars and Stripes, the numbers 1776 and 2026, and Superman’s logo with ’45’ and ’47’. A diamond-winged eagle carries a ruby shield, all crafted in 18-karat gold. This ring is a symbol of appreciation from Antwerp’s century-old diamond community to U.S. President Donald Trump.
Gift Presentation
Isidore Mörsel, president of the Antwerp World Diamond Center (AWDC), presented the ring to Bill White, the U.S. ambassador to Belgium. This gift serves as a reminder of the enduring partnership between the United States and Belgium, reflecting the pressure and trust akin to natural diamonds.
May this ring serve as a lasting reminder that true partnership, like the finest natural diamonds, are formed under pressure, endure the test of time, and shine brightest when built on trust.– Isidore Mörsel
The Significance of the Gift
The ring’s estimated value ranges from $25,000 to $35,000, crafted by Antwerp-based jeweler David Gotlib. Although the AWDC and Gotlib did not disclose the valuation, independent jewelers confirm this price range.
Despite its value being lower than other gifts, such as a $400 million plane, it highlights the importance of golden and glitzy gifts in gaining favor with the U.S. president.
Political Context
This gesture follows the removal of U.S. tariffs on diamond imports from Belgium. The AWDC played a role in the European Commission’s negotiations with Trump’s administration for tariff agreements in 2025. Though AWDC did not lobby directly, it provided input crucial to securing tariff removals.
U.S. presidents can accept gifts with discretion, except those from foreign governments without congressional approval. There’s a requirement to register personal gifts in annual financial disclosures. Trump’s recent disclosures include gifts such as a sculpture and World Cup final tickets.
Event Celebration
Alongside the ring presentation, more than 8,000 attendees participated in a grand event marking America’s 250th anniversary. Contributions from sponsors like Lockheed Martin, Intel, and chocolate companies Leonidas and Ferrero helped raise over $5.5 million. Additionally, musician Alexis Wilkins sang the national anthem, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
Ambassador White announced plans to display the ring in the Oval Office, reinforcing its significance as a piece of U.S. history.
