Jerusalem, Israel — U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee recently responded to claims made by Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., regarding his visit to the West Bank. Khanna asserted that his delegation was detained by Israeli settlers during a visit meant to explore the Biblical heartland of Israel.
Ambassador Huckabee publicly refuted Khanna’s account, stating that the American Embassy was not informed about the visit and advising accordingly, emphasizing in an X post that the embassy had no knowledge of Khanna’s planned arrival.
Khanna responded, indicating disbelief in Huckabee’s assertion and mentioning communication with the embassy and Israeli forces. He stressed his party’s safety was ensured by Deputy Chief of Mission David Brownstein, thanking him for his efforts.
Khanna has insisted that the settlers who detained him should face prosecution and called for investigations into IDF officers involved in the incident. He described how settlers blocked their van and displayed firearms.
The incident has sparked controversy with some media coverage contrasting Khanna’s claims to footage released by members of his own delegation.
Despite criticism that Khanna’s visit was motivated by political ambitions, he maintained the trip’s aim was a Palestinian-led perspective on regional issues, given his previous visits focused on Israeli insights.
Critics such as Dan Diker suggested the visit was a publicity stunt potentially linked to an anticipated presidential run. Others, including Rep. Josh Gottheimer, rebuked Khanna for neglecting to meet with survivors of recent terror attacks while in Israel.
Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S., Yechiel Leiter, criticized Khanna for not coordinating his visit with Israeli authorities, stating that comprehensive planning could have prevented misunderstandings.
Leiter asserted the Congressman’s actions were provocative, noting Khanna’s rhetoric about Israel following the visit and offering further discussions to resolve grievances.
The IDF clarified that the delegation’s arrival was spontaneous, lacking coordination that could mitigate security risks. Upon investigating, it was confirmed the area was not a closed military zone, permitting the delegation to proceed after initial complications.
An Israeli security official reiterated the importance of coordination for visits by foreign dignitaries to sensitive zones, pointing out formal security involvement only occurred after the delegation faced civilian resistance.
In broader American political nuances, Diker contended that use of such visits for electoral narratives undermines the genuine complexities of regional geopolitics, emphasizing the disruption caused by Iran and broader international issues.
