The Los Angeles Dodgers made a significant move by acquiring two-time AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers during the trade deadline. Skubal learned about the trade during the Tigers’ victory over the Athletics and expressed emotional sentiments as he prepared to transition from the team that drafted him in 2018.
Skubal expressed excitement about joining the Dodgers, a team on a pursuit for their third consecutive World Series title. He joins a star-studded roster featuring players like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Mookie Betts. The Dodgers, leading the majors with a 3.36 ERA among starting pitchers, aim to strengthen their position as favorites for the World Series with Skubal’s addition.
The Dodgers, already boasting a high opening-day payroll of $323.3 million, will pay Skubal approximately $9.5 million for the remaining season. In return, the Tigers receive three promising prospects: right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith, and outfielder Zyhir Hope. Skubal’s season statistics include a 7-5 record and a 2.79 ERA with 116 strikeouts over 96 2/3 innings.
“I’m excited to be a Dodger. I’m excited to get down there and meet all those guys and chase three championships in a row,” Skubal stated.
Skubal, who is eligible for free agency post-World Series, expressed his desire to help the Tigers attain a World Series title. Despite his strong performances, including pivotal postseason games, the Tigers have long sought a championship since 1984. Skubal’s leadership and competitive drive have been evident in his commitment to the team’s success.
The Tigers attempted to strengthen their rotation with significant contracts, including a $115 million, three-year deal for pitcher Framber Valdez and a $22 million contract for infielder Gleyber Torres. However, their rough start this season placed them 2.5 games behind the wild-card spot. Despite a mid-season recovery, Detroit’s recent losses hampered their chances.
Manager A.J. Hinch praised Skubal’s contributions: “I’ve watched this guy rise to the top of the sport. He’s carried us a lot. I’ll forever be grateful that our paths crossed and the things that he did for this organization and for a couple of playoff teams.”
Skubal underwent a successful minor surgery in May to address a pitching elbow issue and returned to the mound in June. Despite these challenges, his persistence and performance have been commendable.
