Donovan Mitchell has secured a lucrative four-year, $273 million contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers, which includes a trade kicker and a player option for the 2030-31 season. Although Mitchell was eligible for a larger deal next year, he chose to take the extension as soon as he could this summer.
Cleveland has solid reasons to build their basketball future around Mitchell. He is a seven-time All-Star, with his first three selections occurring during his time with the Utah Jazz before he joined the Cavaliers in 2022.

During his time with the Cavaliers, Mitchell has averaged impressive numbers, with 26.7 points per season, peaking at 27.9 points last season. His on-court excellence has been recognized by making the All-NBA team in three out of four years.
After the Cavaliers were knocked out by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, Mitchell mentioned having “unfinished business” with the team. At that time, he was approaching the last assured year of his previous contract, with a player option for 2027.
Now, the focus turns to the Cavaliers’ future hopes concerning LeBron James. The NBA’s leading scorer, James, has announced he will not continue with the Los Angeles Lakers beyond the 2026-27 season. James has not confirmed his next step, but speculation includes a return to Cleveland.

The salary cap constraints might pose challenges, with the Cavaliers having offered Mitchell a max extension. However, the general consensus is that this deal does not impede their chances of welcoming back James.
The Cavaliers, who reached the Eastern Conference Finals, would allow James the opportunity to possibly end his career where it all began, supported by players like Mitchell and Evan Mobley.
The team is reportedly also in talks with James Harden for an agreement that aligns with their salary cap strategies. The potential for bringing “The Chosen One” back to the Cavaliers remains an exciting prospect.
Mitchell’s commitment to Cleveland is firm, and he looks forward to achieving his goals with the Cavaliers.
