The Lehigh Valley, including cities like Allentown, is increasingly diverse. Allentown has transformed from its past reputation of industrial decline. Now, it features a boutique hotel, specialty coffee shops, and high-rise lofts. This change is driven by growth in logistics, biotech, and high-tech manufacturing industries.
However, the economic boom has led to increased costs. The working-class population experiences financial strain. Brian Fasolino, 28, recently returned to Jim Thorpe after six years in the military. Despite finding employment installing piping systems, he struggles to afford living independently from his parents. “I was kind of hoping that things didn’t change all that much, and boy was I wrong,” he remarked.

Pennsylvania’s Seventh Congressional District saw a shift from Democratic to Republican representation in 2024. The Democrats aim to reclaim the seat with Bob Brooks, a retired firefighter and union representative, as their candidate. Brooks believes his background resonates with the district’s voters. Having experienced hardship, including time on food stamps and living in public housing after losing his family’s home, he stated, “I think they can see themselves in me.”
