El-Sayed Advocates Diplomatic Approach to Mexican Cartels

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed recently emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts in combating Mexican cartels, while attributing their rise to the availability of American-manufactured guns. El-Sayed expressed these views during an appearance on ‘The Moment Podcast’ alongside co-hosts Jorge and Paola Ramos.

When queried about advocacy for using troops or drones against cartels, El-Sayed dismissed the notion, stressing that the United States shares some responsibility. ‘Let’s be clear, American-manufactured guns are responsible for a lot of the cartels,’ he noted.

Diplomacy Over Militarization

According to El-Sayed, addressing the transnational flow of drugs and guns requires cooperative diplomatic means rather than military actions. He emphasized working collaboratively with Mexican authorities to ‘contain what he described as cartel behavior influenced by American firearms.’

‘We need to be working with Mexican counterparts to support them in an effort to contain cartels,’ El-Sayed explained. ‘Containing cartels doesn’t mean that we go and do war-like actions south of the border. It means working alongside them to determine the flow of guns that contribute to cartel behavior and address our responsibility in this issue.’

El-Sayed also highlighted the urgency of halting the northward movement of fentanyl, describing cartel operations as a ‘complex system’ needing comprehensive strategies.

Campaign Clarification and Controversies

El-Sayed’s campaign clarified to Fox News Digital his intention to collaborate with the Mexican government in stopping the illegal trafficking of guns and drugs across the border. However, his past advocacy for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) remains a notable aspect of his political agenda.

Despite criticizing the current administration’s border control efforts, El-Sayed’s remarks came shortly after the Trump administration sanctioned various individuals linked to the Sinaloa Cartel. This action, taken by the Treasury Department, exemplified ongoing attempts to weaken cartel influence as part of President Donald Trump’s policies.

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House and Department of Homeland Security for a response to El-Sayed’s views, but no immediate comments were provided.
