Elgin’s Anthony Foster Follows in Father’s Footsteps on the Field

Football has been a lasting connection for Anthony Foster of Elgin and his father, also named Anthony. The elder Foster showcased his skills as a receiver, defensive end, and kicker for the Maroons. ‘We talk about it all the time,’ Foster said, highlighting their shared passion for the sport. His father was part of the team the last time Elgin hosted a playoff game at Memorial Field, securing a 38-15 victory over East St. Louis in 2000.

This week, as Foster prepares to lead Elgin (5-4) against Reavis (4-5) in a Class 7A opening-round playoff game, the connection to past victories looms large. Should they win, their next challenge is against East St. Louis.

Elgin coach Anthony Mason emphasized the significance of their goals for the season. ‘That was our mission the whole offseason, trying to succeed on Friday night,’ Mason noted. Foster’s contribution has been pivotal, especially after missing crucial games last season due to an injury and a previous ACL tear that sidelined him as a sophomore.

‘This opportunity is incredible, given the uncertainty about having him play,’ Mason said. ‘Despite a second ACL injury, he persevered.’ Foster’s resilience has inspired his teammates. Senior quarterback Jacob Rufino acknowledged Foster’s impact, stating, ‘His toughness has motivated us to play for each other.’

On the field, Foster has accumulated 1,087 yards and 15 touchdowns on 127 carries, along with 11 receptions for 87 yards and another touchdown. Before his injury last season, he managed 629 yards and five touchdowns. ‘I can catch the ball and handle contact. I’m elusive and can navigate the gaps,’ Foster said.

Elgin’s offense isn’t limited to a single strategy. Rufino has passed for 1,359 yards and 12 touchdowns. He appreciates having Foster as a reliable option in the backfield. ‘Having Anthony there boosts my confidence, especially when the pocket collapses,’ Rufino explained.

Coach Mason values Foster’s versatility. ‘Foster is dynamic, whether catching from the backfield or playing receiver. We aim for maximum points on offense.’ Despite the absence of the student section due to a previous incident, Foster looks forward to experiencing the same exhilaration his father felt years ago.

‘I’m thrilled about playing here after 26 years. It’s an awesome feeling,’ Foster expressed. His excitement marks a continuation of family legacy on the Elgin field.

Anthony Foster focuses on film study at Elgin, preparing for his momentous return to Memorial Field.
