Emergency Declared at South Carolina Nuclear Site Due to Laboratory Fire

A significant emergency situation unfolded at the Department of Energy’s nuclear site in South Carolina following a laboratory fire. This incident occurred at the Savannah River Site (SRS) and resulted in minor injuries to one employee.

The fire broke out at the Savannah River National Laboratory near Aiken, South Carolina, prompting a Site Area Emergency declaration by the SRS at 5:39 p.m. on Wednesday. This emergency status was lifted at 9:45 p.m. after extinguishing the fire and conducting radiological surveys, which found no levels of contamination.

Officials reported that no radiological contamination was detected as a result of the incident. Following this, all protective measures were lifted, and site barricades were reopened. Activities at the Savannah River Site have returned to normal operations with no current emergencies or delays reported.

Shift workers and employees were directed to resume their usual work schedules on Thursday, Oct. 29. Those who were advised to shelter in place were allowed to return to work. Highway 125 remained open, and traffic at site entrances was re-established after temporary barricades were removed.

Earlier, SRS had imposed restrictions on rail, river, and air traffic in the site’s vicinity. Response efforts were coordinated by SRS officials in collaboration with state and local government agencies. Local residents were previously encouraged to listen to updates and instructions via local radio and television.

The Savannah River Site plays a crucial role in the nation’s weapons complex, supporting the U.S. military’s strategic deterrence over the past 75 years. According to the Department of Energy, the site works on nuclear material management and radioactive waste cleanup to protect the environment.

The facility, established in the 1950s, developed five reactors for producing nuclear weapon materials, such as tritium and plutonium-239, as well as two chemical separation plants among other support facilities. The SRS is dedicated to ensuring national security, as well as safeguarding workers, the public, and the environment.
