Jon Brown, assistant general manager at the Los Angeles Emergency Management Department, shared updates on efforts to manage the aftermath of the Lineage warehouse fire in Boyle Heights during a meeting this Thursday.
Emergency Management officials announced that cleaning operations are reaching the halfway point following the blaze. Attention is now on managing the spoiled food cleanup, offering temporary housing to affected residents, and penalizing Lineage Logistics for persistent air quality issues.
Brown remarked, “Recovery is not linear. We’re at the intersection of short, intermediate, and long-term recovery.”
The fire erupted on June 17, enduring for over a week and causing the 500,000-square-foot warehouse to collapse. Boyle Heights has since been plagued by severe odors, infestations, and possible toxic air, frustrating the community over the slow cleanup process.
Millions of pounds of rotting food remain inside the collapsed site with school resuming for LA Unified students in two weeks. Brown didn’t comment on Mayor Karen Bass’ directive to clear out the waste within a 45-day deadline, but stressed the urgency in holding Lineage accountable.
Lineage has been fined by both the Los Angeles County health department and the South Coast Air Quality Management District, amid mounting odor complaints from residents.

Lineage sought permits to reestablish the warehouse to its original state, inciting quick objections from locals and Bass, who viewed their move as disrespectful to Boyle Heights families.
The Emergency Management Department will issue a recovery progress report for the neighborhood by Friday.
