The Arte Moreno era for the Angels has concluded. After over two decades, Moreno has sold the team, a move long awaited by Angels fans. Billionaire Stan Kroenke, owner of several major sports teams like the Rams and Nuggets, has purchased the Angels for $4 billion. This sale marks the most expensive in Major League Baseball history.
The acquisition surpasses previous records, including the Padres’ $3.9 billion sale and Steve Cohen’s $2.4 billion purchase of the Mets. In the sports industry, it stands beside Mat Ishbia’s $4 billion deal for the Phoenix Suns, ranking below only the Denver Broncos’ $4.65 billion and Washington Commanders’ $6.05 billion transactions.
Moreno originally bought the Angels in 2003 for $184 million shortly after the team’s only World Series win. He expressed gratitude for his time with the organization and optimism about Kroenke Sports & Entertainment’s future stewardship.
The Angels have had a challenging decade, missing the playoffs since 2014. Over the years, the team has been criticized for squandering the talents of stars like Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Missed opportunities and poor contracts burdened the team under Moreno’s leadership, highlighted by deals with players like Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton.
Despite the setbacks, fans remained loyal, often filling Angel Stadium. This unwavering support was evident as fans gathered to celebrate the news of the sale before a game against the Yankees.
Kroenke’s acquisition signals a fresh start. His track record includes championships with the Rams, Nuggets, and Avalanche, suggesting a promising future for the Angels. The sale, pending MLB approval, will finalize in early 2027, marking the official end of Moreno’s ownership.
