Escalating Drone Warfare: Ukrainian Forces Intensify Attacks on Russia

Ukrainian forces have carried out one of their most extensive drone attacks on Russia since the conflict began over four years ago. According to officials, nearly 800 drones were launched just two days following a similar offensive. Meanwhile, a Russian missile strike in northeastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region resulted in at least 10 fatalities and injured 17 individuals, as homes were destroyed.

The two nations are entrenched in an ongoing conflict involving long-range aerial assaults. Drones and ground robots play critical roles, limiting troop movements along the approximately 1,250-kilometer front line in eastern and southern Ukraine. Analysts indicate that neither side is gaining significant ground.

Ukrainian Drone Technology and Diplomatic Efforts

Over the past year, Ukraine has developed and deployed its own long-range drones for striking targets deep within Russian territory. This advancement in drone technology has attracted attention from governments and defense contractors worldwide. Officials in Kyiv hope these strikes will make Russian citizens more aware of the war’s impact, compelling Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in peace talks. Nonetheless, Putin has shown no indication of ending the invasion.

“Putin continues to prolong the conflict rather than accepting Ukraine’s practical ceasefire offers to halt the bloodshed,” noted Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha in a social media post.

Drone Attacks Inside Russia

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that during an overnight operation, their air defenses intercepted 791 Ukrainian drones across regions including the annexed Crimea and the Black and Azov seas. This represents the second largest drone attack since January 2025. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that over 600 drones targeted the Moscow area, with 180 being shot down. Notably, no fatalities or major damage were reported.

In the outskirts of the capital, three people were injured, according to Gov. Andrei Vorobyov. In the Ryazan region, three individuals sustained wounds, and three houses were damaged, as per Gov. Pavel Malkov. The attack also caused a fire at an industrial site warehouse of Wildberries, Russia’s leading online retailer, frequently accused by Ukraine of supplying the Russian military—an accusation Moscow denies. Wildberries reported only “insignificant damage.”

Media Coverage in Russia

State and Kremlin-affiliated media in Russia provided minimal coverage of the Ukrainian drone strike. Major TV channels, including Russia 1 and Channel One, omitted the attack from their morning bulletins. Conversely, the state news agency RIA Novosti acknowledged the event on its website, labeling it a substantial assault on Moscow. Other media outlets, like Rossiyskaya Gazeta and MK, featured reports on the incident but with limited emphasis.

Humanitarian Impact and International Responses

In a separate Russian missile attack on Pechenihy village in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, 10 civilians were killed, according to initial reports by Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv regional military administration. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as “brutal,” indicating damage to homes, vehicles, and community facilities. “We will definitely respond to this Russian strike,” he asserted on social media.

Across Ukraine’s Sumy region, three people lost their lives, and three others were wounded in Russian attacks, as reported by Ukraine’s National Police.

Support from the United Kingdom

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting Ukraine following reports of Kyiv using British-made drones against Russia. He stated that this policy extends from previous administrations and will continue. Following these developments, the Russian Embassy in the U.K. warned of “unidentified consequences” resulting from London’s support.

Brian Melley in London contributed additional reporting.
