Residents of Georgia’s 13th Congressional District have selected Everton Blair to complete the term of the late Rep. David Scott, following his death in April. This decision was projected by The Associated Press.
Blair emerged victorious against Marcye Scott, daughter of the late David Scott, in the recent special election. Before this, Blair, who was previously the chair of the Gwinnett County School Board, had finished second to Marcye Scott out of five candidates during the July 28 nonpartisan special election, leading both to a runoff held on Tuesday.
Despite this victory, Blair’s time in office will be brief, as he will only serve the remaining months of Scott’s final term, ending in January. This is due to Blair placing third in the May Democratic primary for the upcoming full two-year term.
The upcoming election in November will allow voters to decide between Democratic state Rep. Jasmine Clark and Republican Jonathan Chavez for the full term commencing in January. Historically, the 13th District has strongly supported Democratic candidates, with Scott securing his 2024 election with approximately 72% of the vote. Moreover, then-Vice President Kamala Harris achieved about 71% in the district.
With the midterm elections approaching in 70 days, the district’s political landscape remains favorable to the Democrats.
