Expansion of AI-Driven Education at Alpha Schools Across the U.S.

Alpha School, a private network known for replacing traditional classroom education with AI and adaptive learning software, is broadening its reach across the United States. Currently, campuses are operational or being launched in 16 states. Instead of conventional lectures, students complete core subjects using personalized software, while adult staff members, called ‘guides,’ provide support, mentoring, and motivation.

What Are Teacher-Free Schools?

Alpha School emphasizes a ‘2-Hour Learning model.’ Students use AI-assisted programs for about two hours each morning to study core subjects at their own pace and level. In the afternoons, workshops cover topics like public speaking, entrepreneurship, leadership, coding, and financial literacy. Through this model, students can complete academic work more efficiently and spend more time on practical skills. According to Alpha, conventional classrooms often limit students’ potential, whereas their model allows them to achieve more.

Though guides remain on campus, their roles have shifted significantly. They focus on motivating students, setting goals, and supporting overall development, while AI handles most academic instruction. Alpha claims that students in their program grow academically 2.6 times faster than their peers, as measured by nationally normed assessments.

Despite these claims, some educational experts caution against fully AI-centered schooling. Research indicates AI tutoring can enhance learning and provide personalized teaching; however, bodies like UNESCO highlight concerns over privacy, critical thinking, and reduced human interaction. Many argue AI should complement human educators, not replace them entirely.

Alpha’s expansion coincides with ongoing concerns over declining reading levels and the integration of AI in education. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s PISA 2025 report revealed that American students’ reading and math scores are dropping.

Alpha Schools’ presence extends across several states:

• Arizona: Alpha Scottsdale is set for the 2025-26 academic year, with tuition at $40,000.
• California: Campuses in Palo Alto and Piedmont are open; Malibu and Los Angeles South Bay launch in 2026, with tuition from $60,000 to $75,000.
• Colorado: Alpha Denver launches in Lone Tree for 2026-27; tuition is $50,000.
• Connecticut: Although listed under Connecticut, Alpha Greenwich Armonk will open in New York; tuition is $65,000.
• Florida: The Miami campuses charge up to $65,000 annually.
• Georgia: Alpha Atlanta opens in Roswell, with tuition at $50,000.
• Illinois: The newly launched Alpha Chicago covers pre-K through eighth grade at $55,000 per year.
• Maryland: Alpha Bethesda opens early 2027; tuition is set at $65,000.
• Massachusetts: Alpha Jamaica Plain launches in Boston; tuition is $60,000.
