Michael enjoyed working at Dairy Queen and was active in speech and debate at his high school. His mother, Nicole Durkin, recounted how Michael always ended phone calls, conversations, or voice messages with, “Love you, Mom,” a memory she cherishes. On the morning of September 28, Michael died by suicide after being struck by a train near their home. Previously, he had faced mental health challenges, including a suicide attempt at age 13 that led to therapy. Despite improvements and future planning, Michael faced overwhelming circumstances.
Nicole, a certified accountant, and her husband Mike, an elevator mechanic, maintained strict internet controls for Michael and Isabel, a college freshman. These controls were recently eased to support Michael’s needs for driving and navigation apps. Following his death, the family discovered messages and threats on Michael’s phone, prompting an investigation by local and federal authorities. Nicole expressed disbelief over the manipulative extortion Michael faced, stressing that there are always solutions to such issues, despite his feelings of hopelessness.
Statistics show that cyber crimes against children have risen. Between 2021 and 2023, reports of online enticements to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children increased over 300%. The Indiana task force recorded over 29,635 cyber tips last year.
The Durkin family decided to speak out about Michael’s experience to aid other families navigating digital dangers. Nicole commented that any help provided to another child or family would make sharing their story worthwhile. Michael had hope for his future, considering an airplane mechanic career, and was engaged in regular therapy. Though seeking justice is challenging, Nicole wishes their experience prevents similar tragedies elsewhere.
By sharing on Facebook, many empathized with the Durkin’s pain, having faced similar situations. Nicole emphasized the unparalleled pace of technological change, underscoring the need for awareness and communication between parents and children about mental health.
Community support has been encouraging, as Nicole, a longtime Chesterton resident, described. Donations were made in Michael’s honor. Reflecting on the night of Michael’s death, Nicole recalled him looking after her while she was unwell. Early the following morning, she found him missing, only to learn of a train accident nearby. Discovering his belongings at home deepened her anguish but fueled her resolve to advocate for caution and understanding.
Nicole reflects on missed opportunities and changes made recently, seeking inner peace. She recalls Michael’s resilience during a severe storm, providing a glimpse of his zest for life. Despite her sorrow, Nicole hopes to impact change for the better.
