EA Sports’ College Football 27 hit the market last week, sparking both excitement and controversy. The introduction of microtransactions in the game angered many fans. Microtransactions involve paying real money to access certain game features, a practice that’s becoming common in today’s video games. However, their inclusion in College Football 27 was unexpected by many, even a year ago.
Many fans opposed the concept of microtransactions.
YouTuber Bordeaux led the charge against EA Sports regarding these microtransactions. His campaign aimed to remove them entirely. As a well-known creator, Bordeaux played a key role in rallying gamers against this practice. Despite the potential risk to his career, Bordeaux didn’t hesitate to push back against EA Sports.
When questioned about his motivation in a recent conversation, Bordeaux stated, “No matter what, I have never needed a partnership to do something.” While he praised the game itself, he expressed strong disapproval of the microtransactions, urging fans not to spend money on them.
The campaign bore fruit. EA Sports announced they would eliminate microtransactions from College Football 27. Bordeaux celebrated this victory with a YouTube video titled “We Won.” Nonetheless, EA’s mention of “providing service plans for CFB28” suggests that challenges might persist in the future.
For now, Bordeaux achieved his goal. Reflecting on his efforts, he wanted to raise awareness and be honest about his stance, feeling it was unfair for content creators to be caught off guard. He mentioned during an interview, “I wanted to speak my mind on how I felt, and raise some awareness to it.” Bordeaux sought community support and urged EA to reconsider its decisions.
Should Bordeaux consider re-partnering with EA, his conditions are clear. “Take out microtransactions completely, bring back all of the features that they removed,” he stated. His terms include ensuring modes like “Dynasty” and “Road to Glory” remain free from microtransactions, especially offline.
Currently, Bordeaux enjoys his successful campaign. His notable stand against a widely criticized practice shows consumer influence in the gaming industry.
