The recent victory of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a far-right party, in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt has raised concerns among some Israeli officials. This marks the first time since the Holocaust that such a party has won a state election in Germany, as noted by a Jewish group.
Amichai Chikli, Israel’s minister of diaspora affairs and combatting antisemitism, is one of the Israeli officials who have built relationships with right-wing parties in Europe, although he has not done so in Germany or Austria.
In Tel Aviv, some Israeli government members have voiced their worries over the AfD’s electoral success. The concerns highlight the complicated relationship between Israel and the European right-wing political landscape, as some officials remain silent about the development.
