The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently terminated three FEMA workers after an inspector general report uncovered bias in disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Milton. These dismissals are in addition to prior firings related to the same misconduct. According to FEMA’s Office of Professional Responsibility, the employees did not uphold FEMA’s conduct standards.
“Our duty is to safeguard all Americans, irrespective of political affiliations,” stated DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. “This is crucial in disaster relief where timely response can save lives. Rest assured, responsible parties have been penalized, and measures are in place to prevent recurrence.”
FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton emphasized accountability, attributing enhanced oversight to initiatives from President Trump. “Under my leadership, all those involved have faced consequences. Political bias does not belong in public service,” said Hamilton.
The controversy follows the dismissal of FEMA supervisor Marn’i Washington, who allegedly instructed workers to ignore homes displaying Trump signs in Lake Placid, Florida. Hurricane Milton’s devastation left over 3 million Floridians without power and resulted in tornado-related fatalities.
Marn’i Washington defended her actions in the Washington Post, citing a tense political atmosphere. “During this highly charged political season, our safety concerns were valid. We faced aggressive behaviors and threats,” she explained. Washington described scenarios where individuals confronted them with accusations and hostility, expressing distrust towards government aid during the political upheaval.
