The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. is now surrounded by fencing. Officials describe this as a preventive security action before the July 4 holiday.
President Donald Trump has pointed to vandalism as the cause of recent issues at the pool. These problems include algae return and peeling blue lining, which followed a $14-million refurbishment. His administration reports that six arrests have been made related to incidents at this location, and 17 police reports have been filed.
The Department of the Interior notes that this step is part of larger efforts to protect the landmark amid rising concerns about its condition and maintenance. In a statement to The Hill, the department explained that the barrier aims to preserve the pool. They mentioned, “With the increase in vandalism by leftist activists, the fencing is going up earlier than originally planned to ensure no more damage is done to this historic site.”
Officials have not provided detailed accounts of the incidents leading to these new measures. However, they acknowledge that protective efforts are being intensified as more visitors are expected.
