Fernando Mendoza, the first overall pick in the NFL draft, is expected to face challenges in his rookie season with the Las Vegas Raiders. Despite being seen as a beacon of hope for the team’s future, Mendoza encountered difficulties during a preseason game against the Houston Texans on Thursday night.
In only his second pass of the night, Mendoza threw an interception. Texans linebacker Wade Woodaz seized the opportunity, returning it 80 yards for a touchdown. This moment proved tough for Mendoza, visibly upset on the Raiders sideline despite attempts by teammates to provide support.
“Yeah, that’s football, you know? It’s not gonna be perfect,” said veteran player Maxx Crosby to ESPN’s Laura Rutledge. “He’s a rookie. You got to go through some ups and downs as part of the game, and it’s how you respond.”
Crosby emphasized the importance of perseverance, encouraging Mendoza to remain true to himself and continue playing with his unique style.
The outing against the Texans was less successful than Mendoza’s previous debut game. Last week, he impressed against the Arizona Cardinals, completing 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown, avoiding any interceptions. However, in the game against the Texans, he completed just over 50% of his passes, ending with a passer rating of 42.6.
Throughout the first half, Mendoza’s performance was inconsistent. He managed six consecutive completions following the interception but faltered by missing two more throws, including a dropped pass.
ESPN analyst and former top draft pick Troy Aikman commented on the adjustments Mendoza must make. The relationship between defender and receiver is a lot tighter than in college. Players are quicker, whether inside or outside the field,” Aikman noted.
These learning experiences are crucial for Mendoza, contributing to his development as an NFL player.
