FIFA Faces Legal Scrutiny Over World Cup Ticket Practices

FIFA, led by President Gianni Infantino, is under investigation by the attorneys general of New Jersey and New York. They are questioning FIFA’s ticket pricing and sales tactics for the World Cup hosted in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada this summer. Concerns focus on the significant rise in ticket prices compared to past tournaments.

Ticket Price Controversy

FIFA has raised ticket prices for this World Cup and introduced dynamic pricing. Tickets for the final match in New Jersey on July 19 initially cost $6,730, far exceeding the $1,600 charged for the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar. Later sales saw these tickets priced at $10,990.

The introduction of a new ticket category, “Front Category,” with some seats priced over $30,000, has added to the controversy. Critics, including former President Trump, have voiced disapproval of such high costs.

Sales Tactics Under Fire

Legal experts question whether FIFA is acting as a monopoly by keeping detailed ticket sales data from consumers and utilizing tactics to pressure buyers. Attorney Derek Howard highlights how scarce information and changes in pricing contribute to consumer uncertainty.

Ticket sales during the current “last-minute sales” phase happen at various times without transparency on ticket availability and pricing, adding to consumer frustration.

Seat Assignment Concerns

Another issue is FIFA’s process for assigning seat locations. Fans initially select a broad ticket category but receive specific seats later. This differs from common U.S. practices where fans generally pick their seats at purchase.

Many premium seats are reserved for corporate sponsors, leaving fans with less desirable options despite paying high prices. FIFA has been criticized for failing to communicate these details clearly and altering seating categories post-purchase.

Potential Legal Outcomes

Although FIFA has not commented on these issues, legal experts believe the organization could face lawsuits regarding its ticket sales processes. Other attorneys general, including California’s Rob Bonta, are also investigating FIFA’s practices.

Despite the controversy, Infantino maintains that adapting to the North American market is driving these prices, predicting the World Cup will generate over $11 billion from various deals. However, fan dissatisfaction and potential legal repercussions continue to loom.
