FIFA Rescinds Suspension Allowing Balogun to Play in World Cup

FIFA has rescinded the suspension of Folarin Balogun, allowing him to participate in the U.S. World Cup elimination game against Belgium. The decision comes after Balogun received a red card in the previous match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In a statement issued on Sunday, FIFA declared that the suspension is deferred for a year-long probationary period, based on article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. Should Balogun commit a similar offense during this time, the suspension will be reinstated along with any additional penalties.

Balogun has been instrumental for the U.S. team, scoring three goals in three matches. He is noted as the first American to achieve such a feat in a World Cup since 1930.

The red card incident occurred when Balogun collided with Bosnia’s Tarik Muharemovic during the second half. The collision led to both players falling, prompting the video assistant referee to review the play, resulting in the red card.

Post-match, Balogun showed professionalism by shaking hands with referee Raphael Claus and expressed respect for the decision. U.S. Soccer released a statement acknowledging FIFA’s decision and expressing focus on the upcoming match against Belgium.

Balogun was informed of the lifted suspension during a bus ride to training. He is expected to join the team as they prepare for the crucial Round of 16 match in Seattle.
