FIFA Reverses Suspension of U.S. Soccer Star Folarin Balogun

FIFA has reversed its decision to suspend Folarin Balogun, a key player for Team USA, reinstating him for a pivotal match against Belgium. This change has prompted Belgium to consider appealing the decision, causing confusion shortly before the game begins.

Reports indicate that FIFA issued suspensions against two members of the U.S. Soccer Federation before the World Cup face-off with Belgium. Those affected were team manager Sam Zapatka and Frank Pannell, Vice President of Security for U.S. Soccer. The U.S. team, weakened by these suspensions, lost 4-1, concluding their run in the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA has not disclosed specific reasons for these suspensions. However, sources suggest they relate to incidents in a prior match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, involving breaches of match protocols and unauthorized access to restricted areas. No physical confrontations were reported.

Zapatka has been with the U.S. Soccer Federation since 2015, assuming the role of team administrative manager in 2020. The federation clarified that these suspensions are separate from the appeal regarding Balogun’s red-card suspension.

Belgium contested FIFA’s decision to lift Balogun’s suspension, but FIFA maintained its decision, allowing him to play for Team USA.

President Donald Trump commented on the situation, revealing he spoke with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Trump stated, “All I did was, I asked for a review, because I didn’t think it was a foul. I thought it was two great athletes…”

With Belgium’s win over the U.S., they progress to the quarterfinals to face Spain at Los Angeles Stadium.
