Finding Normalcy at Kyiv’s McDonald’s Amid Conflict

Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, many residents seek a semblance of normalcy. For some, this search leads them to a familiar fast-food restaurant located in Kyiv. This McDonald’s has become a beacon of everyday life amid the chaos.

Zlatoslava Supruniuk, 36, is one of these residents. She was photographed near the McDonald’s in Kyiv on July 10. Supruniuk has fond memories of visiting Ukraine’s first McDonald’s on its opening day back in 1997.

The McDonald’s in the Lukianivka neighborhood of Kyiv stands near an old Soviet-era weapons factory. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion began over four years ago, this area has frequently been under attack.

For many Ukrainians, the fast-food chain represents consistency and the hope of returning to normalcy during these turbulent times.
