Finland’s Calm Approach Amid Ukraine Tensions

At the United Nations General Assembly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed concerns that Russia may extend its conflict beyond Ukraine. Meanwhile, Finnish President Alexander Stubb presented a composed perspective, expressing Finland’s readiness for Russian actions. He credited former President Donald Trump for advancing peace negotiations.

Stubb mentioned that Trump’s efforts, supported by negotiators like Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, have been beneficial in seeking a peaceful resolution. Stubb and Norway’s prime minister have played a diplomatic role, acting behind the scenes to facilitate communication among Ukraine, the US, and European nations.

I think we’re certainly in a better place than we were before President Trump started, Stubb said.

During a diplomatic week focused on conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, Trump and Zelenskyy met to discuss ongoing efforts. Zelenskyy reiterated his priority for peace and thanked Trump for sending envoys to Kyiv after talks in Moscow.

Zelenskyy warned of potential Russian offensives against neighboring countries, using drones, missiles, or land operations. He pointed out existing provocations like drone incursions and emphasized the need for European countries to respond to Russian intimidation.

Stubb countered this with a calmer view, noting that Finland, sharing a long border with Russia, sees no imminent threat. He distinguished between the active conflict in Ukraine and Russia’s broader hybrid campaigns involving cyberattacks and sabotage in Europe.

We have to see this as a campaign, he stated.

Stubb regarded Finland’s decades of preparation as a strength. Finland’s defense includes mandatory military service, a strong reserve force, and significant military assets. Recently, Finland enhanced its military capacity by acquiring 64 F-35A fighter jets. This addition complements its existing military infrastructure, which includes a large artillery and extensive civilian shelters.

Joining NATO in April 2023 bolstered Finland’s security stance. Stubb expressed confidence that Finland’s preparedness deters direct Russian aggression. He highlighted Finland’s readiness and emphasized the importance of continued support for Ukraine.

We don’t have them because we’re worried about Sweden, Stubb quipped about Finland’s military readiness.

Stubb used the UN platform to advocate for sustained aid to Kyiv, urging global support for a peace aligned with the U.N. Charter. Additionally, he encouraged expanding SpaceX’s Starlink coverage to aid Ukraine’s military operations.

Regarding global conflicts, Stubb acknowledged their interconnectedness, noting collaborations between Russia and Iran. He supported Trump’s call for preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and warned against their regional actions.

Stubb concluded that managing multiple global conflicts requires continuous efforts, reflecting on the current diplomatic challenges. In his view, comprehensive attention and action are essential in tackling these issues.
