Firefighters Battle Chemical Tank Risk in Garden Grove

An industrial tank filled with a hazardous chemical in Southern California is at risk of exploding or breaching, leading to ongoing evacuation orders for more than 40,000 residents in the surrounding area. The threat persists as firefighters continue their efforts to manage the situation.

The tank contains approximately 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, which is both highly flammable and toxic. Located at a GKN Aerospace plant in Garden Grove, the tank’s condition has been precarious for four days.

According to the Orange County Fire Authority’s interim fire chief, TJ McGovern, the pressure inside the tank has increased significantly, resulting in the release of gas capable of triggering an explosion. Firefighters have been attempting to cool the tank by applying large amounts of water, but the situation remains volatile.

The situation is unprecedented due to the volatility of the chemical, according to Chief McGovern.

Staff from GKN Aerospace have been unable to neutralize the chemical’s instability, as a valve failure has hindered their efforts to inject a stabilizing agent.

Methyl methacrylate is a critical component in producing resins and acrylic plastics, including plexiglass. In response to the threat, extensive evacuation zones have been established around the site by authorities.
