An evening flight from British Columbia to Toronto was canceled after a toddler refused to fasten their seatbelt, according to the airline. Porter Airlines confirmed the incident to Fox News Digital.
Flight 444 was scheduled to depart from Victoria International Airport at 10:30 p.m. The flight had started taxiing when a member of the cabin crew noticed the child standing on their seat without a buckled seatbelt.
The airline stated, “A young child was standing in their seat and would not secure their seatbelt.” Attempts by the accompanying adult and the crew to fasten the seatbelt were unsuccessful.
“The aircraft could not take off in this unsafe condition, so the crew elected to return to the terminal and have the passengers disembark,” the airline added.
An airport curfew at Victoria International Airport prevents takeoffs after 12:30 a.m. The process of removing the passengers and their baggage and completing required paperwork took sufficient time, causing the flight to be canceled. As a result, passengers spent the night at the airport.
The airline rebooked passengers for a flight on Friday, extending apologies for the inconvenience caused.
A safety seat or restraint device is mandatory for children under two years old on Porter Airlines. The age of the child involved was not disclosed.
