Bodycam footage reveals investigators responding to a Florida home where they rescued over 100 animals living in appalling conditions. Martin County Sheriff’s Office describes it as the “worst animal hoarding case” they have ever encountered. More animals continue to be recovered from the property.
Many of these animals have been reunited with their owners who had lost hope. Gail Giustino, 77, a mail carrier, was arrested on July 20 after authorities discovered more than 100 animals in feces-filled cages in her Stuart home. She had been collecting cats along her mail route, according to Sheriff John Budensiek.
“We came expecting to find 15 to 30 cats,” Budensiek remarked, but they found dozens of cats and small dogs instead.
The home lacked air conditioning or ventilation, making temperatures inside soar to around 110 degrees. There was a foot of animal feces in parts of the house. Cats were stuck in hardened feces, which required smashing through to free them.
The smell of animal urine, feces, and ammonia was overwhelming, posing a health hazard for those entering. Since 2014, Giustino had received up to 65 citations for her animal-keeping conditions.
She could have faced 160 counts of animal cruelty but was charged with misdemeanor counts. Her arrest aimed to seize the animals and provide them with necessary care. Authorities hope Giustino will receive mental health treatment.
The Humane Society of Treasure Coast has already received 108 animals from Giustino’s home, with more animals anticipated. Staff are emotionally affected by the animals’ neglected states but find relief as the animals begin to recover.
Local support has been heartwarming, with the community offering adoption requests and treats for the shelter workers. Efforts are underway to reunite pets with their rightful owners. As of July 24, two more pet owners have been reunited with their pets, with others hopeful of the same outcome.
Linh Nguyen experienced a heartfelt reunion with her cat, Patchy, after seven months apart. Her prayers were answered when she learned about the rescued cats, leading her to the Humane Society.
Nguyen’s story reflects the numerous reunions still anticipated. Unclaimed animals will later be available for adoption to caring homes, ensuring they do not accidentally go to new families if their original owners are still searching.
