A Florida woman suffered the loss of her arm in a frightening alligator attack on Saturday. Quick action by a nearby boater may have been crucial in saving her life. The incident occurred on the Silver River near Ocala, where the woman was swimming with others and noticed an approaching alligator. She attempted to fend off the animal with a paddle, but the gator seized her right arm and pulled her underwater.
John Gamache, who was having lunch on his boat with his father, heard the commotion. ‘I saw an alligator head above the water, speeding toward the swimmers,’ Gamache told FOX 35 Orlando. He quickly moved his boat toward them, with the vessel’s approach seemingly scaring off the alligator.
Upon reaching the woman, Gamache encountered a severe injury. ‘It was a terrible wound, with bones protruding and blood everywhere. Each minute was critical,’ he said. Acting swiftly, Gamache used rope from his boat to stabilize her arm while his father assisted other swimmers, including children, onto the boat. They headed to a nearby boat launch where first responders awaited.
The woman’s family confirmed she survived the attack. She was released from the hospital and is now recuperating at home, though she lost her right arm. Gamache later spoke with her family. ‘They called, explaining their emotions, which was heartwarming,’ he shared. ‘Given the circumstances, the outcome was as positive as possible.’
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officers later tracked and removed the 9-foot-8-inch alligator. The area reopened on Sunday.
This event occurred roughly a month after another alligator attack in Florida. Brittany Clark, 31, was hiking near Orlando with her boyfriend and a friend when an alligator attacked her in the Econlockhatchee River. Despite efforts to save her, Clark died from injuries sustained in the attack.
