The French men’s national team demonstrated its strength in the World Cup by comfortably defeating Sweden with a 3-0 victory. This win in the knockout stage guaranteed France another match this week. The recent performances have catapulted France to the top of the FIFA men’s world rankings, ahead of Argentina, who previously defeated them in the final four years ago. The question now is whether anyone can stop Les Bleus this World Cup.
Following the match, Sweden’s head coach, Graham Potter, told reporters that anything is possible in football. He admitted, however, that he has yet to see a better team, given France’s remarkable quality across the field. France’s Kylian Mbappé, aged 27, scored two goals during the match held at the New York/New Jersey Stadium, leading an intimidating attack. He is supported by Ousmane Dembélé, who had a hat trick against Norway and recently won the Ballon d’Or, along with Michael Olise, the tournament’s leading assister, and Bradley Barcola, who has a 40% shot conversion rate on goal.
Throughout the match, France constantly pressured Sweden’s defense, keeping goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström active with multiple shots. Although some early attempts were unsuccessful, including hitting the post and offside plays, Mbappé’s goal in the 45th minute gave France a positive momentum heading into the halftime break.
Potter commended his team for creating opportunities during transitions but noted the difficulty of maintaining defensive positions for a full 90 minutes. Swedish forward Viktor Gyökeres agreed with this sentiment. He observed that France’s team members have a strong understanding and movement, making them difficult opponents.

France’s head coach Didier Deschamps acknowledged the team’s ability to create opportunities, but he plans to make strategic improvements as they advance in the tournament. Deschamps, who led France as a captain to a World Cup victory in 1998, reflected on the team’s cautious start in the first 15 minutes. He emphasized the importance of efficiency in the first half and mentioned plans for small adjustments in coming matches.
France will face Paraguay in the round of 16. Paraguay previously eliminated Germany in a surprising penalty shootout. Deschamps praised Paraguay’s aggressive play against Germany and intends to give his players some rest while preparing for the South American team. Looking ahead, France could potentially face Canada or Morocco in a quarterfinal, both of which have also shown strong performances.
A victory would lead to France’s third consecutive World Cup final since its 2018 title win in Russia. France narrowly lost to Argentina in a previous final during a penalty shootout, despite Mbappé’s efforts to rally the team.
Deschamps remains optimistic yet grounded, acknowledging that France is only in the round of 16. Keeping confidence and preparation in mind, he noted his team’s excellent players and focus towards the upcoming matches.
