Anastasia Potapova Ends Gauff’s Title Defense
At the French Open in Paris, Anastasia Potapova defeated Coco Gauff in the third round. The match concluded with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4 in favor of Potapova. This marks the end of Gauff’s title defense.
Potapova praised Gauff, saying, “Coco is such a champion. I respect her so much.” Potapova expressed immense pride in her performance, highlighting her determination to fight until the final point.
“I’m unbelievably proud of myself,” she said. “I stayed there, that I’ve been fighting for the last point and here I am.”
The match took place in front of sparse audiences, as many fans chose to attend the Champions League soccer final instead. Gauff had previously secured her second Grand Slam title by defeating Aryna Sabalenka at Roland Garros one year ago.
Currently ranked 30th, Potapova, originally from Russia but now representing Austria, improved her record against Gauff to 3-2. This victory follows her promising clay season, including a final in Linz and a semifinal appearance in the Madrid Open as a qualifier.

Despite her loss, Gauff’s statistics were notable. She committed three double faults compared to Potapova’s eight and had 46 unforced errors against Potapova’s 56. Potapova’s dominance in extended rallies was a significant factor, leading to Gauff’s exhaustion.

The tournament experienced high temperatures and humidity, with a peak of 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit). Relief from the heat is expected soon, as cooler weather approaches for the second week. During the heat, a spectator was carried out due to illness.
Elsewhere, French player Diane Parry overcame Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3). Diana Shnaider defeated Oleksandra Oliynykova 7-5, 6-1 amid social media tensions between the two players, arising from the ongoing conflict between their countries.
In men’s play, Alejandro Tabilo overcame Moise Kouame 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (9). Matteo Berrettini endured a marathon against Francisco Comesana, ultimately winning 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (13).
Flavio Cobolli defeated Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 and will face Zachary Svajda next. Svajda advanced by beating Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3.
Later, Felix Auger-Aliassime faced Brandon Nakashima. Ranked No. 4, Auger-Aliassime remained the highest seed in the draw’s top half after the earlier exit of Jannik Sinner.
Safety Adjustments
Organizers adjusted advertising boards’ placement after safety concerns arose. A Turkish player, Zeynep Sönmez, had to withdraw from a doubles match after a fall involving an advertising board.
