French activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla reported abuse while in Israeli custody, but Israeli authorities denied the allegations.
French prosecutors, part of the antiterrorism office, have launched a preliminary investigation into claims of mistreatment by Israeli forces. This follows the interception of a pro-Palestinian flotilla headed to Gaza. Activists accused the Israeli authorities of torture and war crimes. In response, the Israeli authorities have refuted these claims and returned the activists to Turkey.
The incident has drawn international attention, particularly due to a video posted by an Israeli government minister. The minister taunted the detained activists, escalating tensions both internally and internationally. The event occurred amidst increasing diplomatic isolation of Israel among European allies owing to its military actions in Gaza since the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel.
Efforts by pro-Palestinian activists to challenge Israel’s naval blockade and provide aid to the Gaza Strip have intensified. This response came after Israel imposed stricter restrictions during the conflict. Last month’s attempt, which included French activists, was intercepted in the Mediterranean, highlighting the ongoing efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
