Frustration in Anti-Abortion Movement Leads to Calls for Criminal Charges Against Women

In the ongoing effort to ban abortion nationwide, the anti-abortion movement has traditionally maintained that women undergoing abortions should not face legal penalties. Instead, practitioners and facilitators should face prosecution.

However, some conservative leaders argue that arresting women might be the only remaining method to deter them from ending pregnancies. This shift in sentiment is propelled by frustration over rising abortion numbers, even post-Roe v. Wade. Increased availability of abortion pills in states where the procedure is banned partly explains this rise.

Today marks four years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In response, over 60 conservative influencers, anti-abortion leaders, and pastors have signed a petition seeking to end the ‘legal immunities’ that shield women who undergo abortions from prosecution.

This follows a recent vote at the Texas Republican Party’s state convention. Delegates endorsed repealing legal protections that exempt women who get abortions from criminal penalties. The decision was backed by a strong voice vote.

Additionally, Texas’s largest anti-abortion organization is considering a new strategy. They propose targeting women with medical licenses by threatening license revocation if they are found taking abortion pills.
