A young man from Georgia is recovering after sustaining a shark bite while safeguarding his pregnant fiancée at a beach in Florida. The incident occurred near the Dunlawton Beach Approach in Daytona Beach Shores. The shark attacked shortly before 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday, around the time Shark Week started this year. Authorities from Volusia County Beach Safety reported to Fox News Digital that a shark roughly 4 feet in length bit the man’s left foot and ankle.
The victim, identified as Jacorey High from Henry County, Georgia, was treated on the scene by Beach Safety personnel and then transported to a nearby hospital with injuries classified as non-life-threatening. High’s foremost concern was ensuring the safety of his fiancée, taking immediate action to get her out of the water.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, High recognized the shark attack from the feel of the bite on his foot. Despite this, his focus remained on his fiancée’s safety. He noted that the shark continued to chase him after the initial bite, attempting to attack his arm and another leg. However, High managed to fend off the predator and escape to safety.
Upon reaching the shore, High discovered the extent of his injuries. “I didn’t really feel it until I got to the hospital, when they started giving me medicine for it,” he mentioned. Doctors performed surgery on his foot, and High expects that his recovery process could take about three months, hoping that the injuries do not affect any critical areas in his foot that might hinder his return to work.
Experts have alerted beachgoers to stay vigilant this summer due to increased shark sighting reports on U.S. coastlines. Marine biologist Mike Heithaus of Florida International University stressed to Fox News Digital that shark bites are still rare, even during the high-traffic summer beach season. He advised people to be conscious of their environment, avoid murky waters, and stay clear of zones where fishing is prominent or large schools of fish are present.
